O’Connell Contracting were approached in December 2022 by Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to construct a 28,000m2 emergency car park. O'Connells undertook all earthmoving, drainage, utilities and hard landscaping works using in house labour and plant resources. In total approximately 19,000m3 of earth was moved, 12,000m3 of hardcore was imported and 6,160 tons of asphalt was laid during the extremely challenging weather conditions of March/April ’23.  Extensive traffic and logistics management was required due to the site being centrally located within a live hospital site.

O’Connell’s were approached in December 2022 by Surrey &Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to turn around a design & build tender for a 28,000m2 emergency car park. Limited information was provided however O’Connell’s prepared a high level design and a fixed price budget for the Trust within the agreed timeframe of 5 days. O’Connell’s appointed a design team to undertake detailed designs, and in the meantime, mobilised to site to begin topsoil stripping and bulk excavation works due to the urgency of the project.

Rising to the challenge of this fast track project, O’Connell’s team undertook all earthmoving, drainage, utilities and hard landscaping works using in house labour and plant resources. In total approximately 19,000m3 of earth was moved, 12,000m3 of hardcore was imported and 6160 ton of asphalt was laid during the extremely challenging weather conditions of March/April’23.  Extensive traffic and logistics management was required due to the site being centrally located within a live hospital site, as over 1000 HGV movements were required to complete the works. O’Connell’s engagement with stakeholders was crucial for the successful delivery of the project, and the use of local suppliers and sub-contractors greatly mitigated the environmental impact of the project.

Due to the emergency nature of the project, O’Connell’s design team engaged with the Local Authority on the Trust’s behalf in order to ensure all designs were compliant with the latest local design regulations relating to surface water discharge and on site surface water storage requirements. O’Connell’s engaged proactively with the Trust Facilities Management Team, meeting weekly for overall project updates, and maintaining an up to date Community Notice board on the site boundary.

Impressed with O’Connell’s professional approach, the Trust awarded further works, including resurfacing of existing roads within the Trust grounds and the construction of sub-station and generator bases as part of the future expansion of Trust infrastructure.
